- Promoting habitats for Hedgehogs being included in farmland conservation activities
- Promoting the provision of Hedgehog boxes at suitable sites.
- Promoting Hedgehog corridors in new developments
- Supporting the rescue of injured and orphaned Hedgehogs for later release.
Hedgehog: action plan
What we want to achieve - Key Objectives
- Raise awareness of the decline of Hedgehogs and the potential for a recovery in their numbers through appropriate action.
- Provide advice to support Hedgehogs, encourage participation in their conservation and enable an increase in their numbers.
- Carry out surveys*, record signs and sightings of Hedgehogs, and submit records to the Barnsley Biological Record Centre.
- Determine Hedgehog populations and distribution across Barnsley, and continue to identify their best habitats.
- Restore, improve, maintain and create suitable Hedgehog habitats.
- Create links and corridors between appropriate sites with a view to reducing the distance between existing populations.
- Support the rescue of injured or orphaned Hedgehogs and their appropriate release.

Roles:
Land owners and managers: follow best practice in managing grasslands and wetlands to support and extend existing Hedgehog populations
Wildlife conservation bodies: give advice and provide practical support for habitat management for Hedgehog .
Barnsley Council as planning authority:
- takes into consideration records of Hedgehog presence in the planning process
- sets conditions in relevant planning applications to ensure that relevant habitats for Hedgehog are maintained and enhanced
Developers
- Include provision for Hedgehogs in landscaping for example Hedgehog corridors
Voluntary groups and volunteers:
- provide records of sightings and signs of Hedgehog
- help with information about the condition of sites that support Hedgehog
- help with measures to support Hedgehog , eg: habitat management.
